New AeA Report Shows U.S. 4th and 8th Graders Need to Go Back to School;

AeA —Saturday, August 30, 2008 AeA, the nation’s largest technology trade association representing all segments of the high-tech industry, today released the 26th installment of its Competitiveness Series.The report analyzes the latest math and science scores for U.S. 4th and 8th grade students nationally and state-by-state according to figures released by the Department of Education’s National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). In 2007, only 39 percent of 4th graders and 31 percent of 8th graders tested at or above proficient in math. Between 1996 and 2005, the number of 4th grade students testing at or above proficient in science increased by only one percentage point. SAT® Scores Stable as Record Numbers Take Test

Confidence in Public Schools and NCLB Declining Education Next/PEPG National Survey Finds

Hoover Institution, —Saturday, August 16, 2008 Public confidence in America’s public schools and the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) declined in 2008, according to findings from the second annual national survey by Education Next and the Program on Education Policy and Governance (PEPG) at Harvard University. And, with the presidential election in high gear, Education Next/PEPG survey respondents give a clear edge to Democrats as the party “more likely to improve the nation’s schools.” Results show that the public is now split over NCLB: half support leaving it as is or renewing it with minimal changes; half think it needs a major overhaul or should be done away with. The survey also shows that Americans--especially African Americans and Hispanics--are more confident in their local police force than in their local schools. Read more.

College Readiness Stable for 2008 U.S. High School Grads Even as Number of Students Taking ACT® Test Climbs to New Heights
